Chelsea Hospital Buildings

Project Overview: Roof surveys and Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule on Grade 1 listed
Location: Chelsea Hospital Buildings, Chelsea

In March 2020 we undertook visual condition surveys of various roof structures to Grade I and II listed buildings at the Christopher Wren designed Royal Chelsea Hospital site. The buildings date to the late 17th century and are famously home to the Chelsea Pensioners. The roof structures comprised of large slate tiles fixed to the original timber roof trusses and the buildings have remained largely unaltered from original construction and steeped in heritage.

Detailed inspections of the roof areas were undertaken over the course of a week via MEWPS. We produced a 20 year maintenance plan for the roof areas, taking into account the importance of retaining the historic fabric to the buildings and the role sympathetic and traditional repairs have in maintaining the character of heritage buildings. We provided a detailed cyclical maintenance budget and helping plan for wholesale replacements where coverings were nearing the end of their economic life.
